The article I read was about shrink in restaurant operations. What this refers to is when restaurants run at maximum efficiency they will make a certain amount of money but there are leaks in the system and profits will ¡°shrink¡±. Some of these leaks come in the form of employee theft, outside theft, or just human error. Normally you think if an employee makes themselves an extra sandwich or rings in a wrong order how much can that affect the overall totals? This article outlines how important it is to implement different security measures to protect against this and how then can be run through the POS systems to help make them more effective.cash register pos software According to the article, Smith Dairy Queen in Texas just changed their cash handling procedures and reporting tools and saved ,000 in nine months. They saved another ,000 from over/short which means how much money the cashier should have in the drawer at the end of the night and how much is actually there. The software helps them flag suspicious items in the system such as a check that has been canceled multiple times or a check that has been left open all day.cash register pos software Also, in North Carolina, a Wendy¡¯s franchise is using biometrics or fingerprint scanners to help control accountability. Employees have to sign in with their fingerprint and if a manager wants to void an item they can¡¯t just swipe a card. This makes it harder for an employee to borrow or pick up a card and void an item that never existed. The other method mentioned in the article is security cameras.cash register pos software Most stores have security cameras but now stores and connecting them to POS systems so when there is a void or suspicious transaction the manager will be able to review the footage and see who it was that made the transaction.
I feel that this is a much bigger issue than most people realize. There are 13 million employees in the restaurant industry alone. That means that if each person is off by a dollar a day, cash register pos software that is million lost each day. If half of those employees have an unauthorized sandwich each week that¡¯s .5 million a week and .69 BILLION a year. Unfortunately if there is an opportunity for an employee to have something for free or a way for them to take advantage of a system, most would be willing to do it.cash register pos software I know that at the store I worked at it happened all the time. If an employee wanted a cookie, one would ¡°accidentally¡± break and be unfit to serve to a customer. Most people would ask a manager if they could have a sandwich and usually the answer was a yes but there were people that never asked. The solutions proposed in this article seem that they would be effective. Fingerprint scanners to make sure they know who is authorizing a transaction or software to flag when a ticket has been open all day or a camera recording who is ringing at which register when.cash register pos software Little things that add up to make a big difference. We will never be able to account for all employee errors because humans make mistakes but we can try to avoid theft and even try to reduce errors by implementing controls.
